Ever since he was a small child in the hospital, Ted has mixed art and medical images as a way to understand his experiences. One of his goals is to bring art into non-traditional spaces, such as medical facilities, to highlight the emotional impact of pain and healing on everyday people—patients, families, and medical personnel.
Ted approached the University of California Los Angeles Geffen School of Medicine to design a program to enhance its core classes for the medical students. His mission is to curate a series of eight exhibitions over a two-year period that expose medical students to artwork that has been used as an emotional outlet for those with medical problems. Each show is aligned with core classes at the med school. Each artist is required to speak to the med students about their art and the internal source of their work and images.
Ted's plans to continue combining Art and Heath and bring this type of imagery, and the stories of personal strength and fortitude they tell, to schools and galleries around the country. Ted is available to curate medical art exhibits or give lectures on the subject. He has spoken to groups as diverse as High School art classes, Yale Medical School as well as patient groups.
All the shows developed for UCLA are available for tour.
